Mahalibeh Castle

Castles

Al-Mahalbeh Castle was originally built by the Banu al-Ahmar tribe in 1031 CE. It was later seized by the Byzantines, before passing into the hands of the Banu Sali’a tribe in 1118 CE.
The castle was later occupied by the Crusaders, but in 1188 CE, it was successfully reclaimed by Salah ad-Din al-Ayyubi (Saladin) during his military campaigns across the Levant.
In 1408 CE, the castle suffered extensive structural damage due to a powerful earthquake, which destroyed many of its key architectural features. Despite this, Al-Mahalbeh Castle remains a powerful testament to the region’s strategic importance and its rich, layered history of conflict, resilience, and cultural exchange.
