Tell Tweini is one of the most historically significant archaeological sites, where mass graves were discovered alongside pottery vessels, seals, and figurines. These findings indicate deep trade relations with Cyprus and Ugarit. Excavations at the site began in 1999 under a joint Syrian-Belgian mission led by Michel al-Qudsi and Joachim Bretschneider. The mission uncovered residential quarters, temples, and burial grounds dating to various historical periods. Documents obtained by the team suggest that the inhabitants followed a Mediterranean diet, primarily based on dairy products and grains, with limited meat consumption.
