Aleika Castle

Castles

Rooted in the 11th century, Al-‘Aliqa Castle is believed to have been originally constructed during the Byzantine era. Today, the site suffers from significant neglect, with structural damage and the gradual disintegration of its stone blocks threatening the integrity of this once-formidable fortress.

In 1180, the Crusaders sold the castle to the Isma’ilis, who subsequently designated it as one of their key strongholds in the region.

The castle has witnessed numerous historical events, many of which are reflected in Latin inscriptions carved into its stones. According to records from the Syrian Ministry of Tourism, the castle eventually fell under the control of the Mamluk Sultan Baybars, further highlighting its strategic and political importance throughout the medieval period.
