Built in a strategically elevated mountainous area, Al-Khawabi Castle served as a formidable defensive stronghold during the Abbasid era, when it functioned as a military center for the Homs garrison.
The castle was restored by the Byzantines, and in 1140, it was seized by the Ismailis, who transformed it into one of their principal fortresses in the coastal mountain range. Their leader, famously known as the “Old Man of the Mountain,” reinforced the castle’s defenses in 1160.
In 1273, the castle surrendered to Sultan Baybars, who partially destroyed it. From that time, it was repurposed for military use, while large sections were gradually adapted for agricultural and residential purposes.
