Hammams of Sheikh Issa (or Sheikh Issa Baths)

Traditional Public Baths

The Hammam of Sheikh Issa is located on the western bank of the Orontes River and derives its name from the nearby shrine dedicated to Sheikh Issa. The sulfuric waters reach temperatures of up to 40°C, making them particularly effective in treating joint and skin ailments.
The waters are collected in two pools, both covered with stone domes, and the bathhouse itself was constructed during the Ottoman era by provincial governors. Its architectural design features intersecting stone domes and changing rooms topped with “dew-drop” openings for natural light and ventilation.
The marble tiling retains its luster thanks to regular cleaning with sulfur water, while a clever drainage system, built on a sloped foundation, prevents water stagnation—demonstrating both functional brilliance and environmental sensitivity.
