The Orthodox Al-Ghassaniyya School is one of the oldest educational institutions in Homs, founded in 1887 by Bishop Athanasius Attallah. It was established with support from the Russian Orthodox Palestine Society and contributions from local residents. Initially named the “Russian Orthodox Schools,” its mission was to spread knowledge and culture to all people of Homs, regardless of their religious or social background. Over the years, the schools expanded to include several neighborhoods in Homs, such as Bustan al-Diwan, al-Hamidiyeh, Bab al-Siba’a, and al-Mahatta, as well as nearby villages. Despite facing significant challenges during the Syrian war, which caused severe damage to some of its buildings, the school was successfully rehabilitated and resumed its educational mission.
