The Temple of Baalshamin was built in 131 CE in honor of the Canaanite storm god, “Lord of the Heavens.” It consists of a square sanctuary preceded by a portico with Corinthian columns carved with treasures of grapes and pomegranates, symbolizing fertility. In the 5th century, it was converted into a church, and monks carved a cross over an Aramaic inscription at the entrance.
