Deir Al-Sharobim Monastery (Monastery of Saint Charobin)

Religious Monuments

Perched 2000 meters high on Mount Qalamoun, Deir Al-Sharobim occupies a site that once sheltered prehistoric caves before evolving into a Byzantine monastic complex in the 5th century. Mentioned in 14th-century pilgrimage itineraries and described by Pococke in 1737, the monastery fell into ruin by the mid-18th century.
It was faithfully reconstructed by Mother Catherine Abi Haydar between 1983 and 1985, with the church and facilities rebuilt according to their original design, and new accommodations added for visitors and monks. Today, the monastery serves as a vibrant center for spiritual retreats, hosting liturgical services and contemplative gatherings. From its summit, a 29-meter statue of Christ—symbolizing peace and love—overlooks the landscape, preserving the timeless spirit of monastic hospitality and devotion.
