Al-Yusuf House (House of Amir alHajj)

Heritage Houses

AlYusuf House, also known as the “Palace of the Amir alHajj,” is a magnificent palace located in the Sarouja district in central Damascus. After the famous bombardment of the Syrian Parliament in 1945, some MPs sought refuge here—but when French forces attacked the house directly, they escaped through a concealed exit into the city’s depths.
This home was not only a gathering place for the elite but also a generous kitchen, offering free meals to the poor. It belonged to Abdul Rahman Pasha alYusuf, the notable Amir alHajj, who was assassinated in 1920 during the French occupation. The palace spans approximately 2,000 square meters and reflects exquisite internal decorations, including murals, tapestries, and ornate architectural details, making it one of Damascus’s architectural masterpieces.

Special Details

Al-Youssef Palace contains a collection of decorative wall paintings and fabric panels and is considered one of Damascus’s architectural treasures.
