The Mariamite Cathedral of Damascus

Religious Monuments

The Mariamite Cathedral, also known as the Mariamiyya Church, stands as a prominent ecclesiastical landmark in Damascus, the capital of the Syrian Arab Republic. Situated within the historic confines of Old Damascus, specifically to the left of the Straight Street leading towards Bab Sharqi (the Eastern Gate), it is one of Syria’s ancient archaeological churches. Its history dates back to the early days of Christianity’s propagation in Damascus. As an Orthodox church, it belongs to the Greek Orthodox community and serves as the revered seat of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and All the East.

Special Details

The church follows a Byzantine plan and accommodates up to 600 people for various religious services. At the center of the hall and on each side are two stone pulpits, each with a spiral staircase, used for reading the Gospel. On both sides are two bema platforms for the choir to stand and chant hymns during services. At the front is the red platform where priests conduct prayers; behind it lies the altar and rooms for religious rituals.
