Al-Sinjqdar Mosque

Religious Monuments

Erected in 1348 CE, Al-Sinjqdar Mosque rises near the entrance of al-Saroujia Market and showcases a Mamluk layout characterized by alternating ablaq stonework. Its name derives from the word “sanjak” (military banner), as the mosque was designated to safeguard the Prophetic banner, which was ceremoniously brought out during prayers for rain and times of drought.

The entrance opens onto a small courtyard flanked by vaulted arcades, while the prayer hall is crowned with a dome supported by four pointed arches. The mosque suffered several fires—most notably in 1928—yet ongoing restoration efforts successfully preserved the minaret and reinstated its balconies.

Today, it stands as a spiritual destination for visitors drawn to its blend of Sufi mysticism and the city’s military legacy.
