The Al-Adiyat Society is located in the heart of Aleppo, in the Jamilieh district, known for its European-style urban character. The Society stands as one of the city’s most prominent cultural landmarks, reflecting a long-standing commitment to preserving Syria’s heritage.
The Society’s headquarters occupies a unique architectural structure that harmoniously blends Ottoman architectural features with authentic local Syrian elements. Its ornately decorated stone façade, elegant iron balconies, and central entrance leading to a twin staircase exemplify the building’s historical charm. The property spans three floors, housing spacious halls and a peaceful rear garden.
The building’s rooms are carefully arranged to serve the Society’s mission. They include offices for board members and working committees, a richly stocked library, a permanent exhibition of key heritage artifacts, and a lecture hall where cultural events and public lectures are held.
The Society was originally founded in 1924 under the name “Friends of the Citadel and the Museum”, in protest against the removal of a significant historical element from a mosque inside the Aleppo Citadel by the French garrison. In 1931, its name was changed to “Al-Adiyat Society” to reflect a broader mission of safeguarding both tangible and intangible cultural heritage across Syria.
The building sustained damage during the February 6, 2023 earthquake, and restoration and structural reinforcement efforts are currently ongoing to preserve its historic walls and façades—an essential endeavor to safeguard this important cultural institution.
