Al-Kahef Castle

Castles

Al-Kahf Castle was a formidable Ismaili stronghold in the 12th century AD. It served as the residence of their prominent leader Rashid al-Din Sinan, famously known as the “Old Man of the Mountain.”

In 1273, the castle was captured by the Mamluk Sultan al-Zahir Baybars, marking the end of Ismaili control over this strategically significant site nestled within the rugged coastal mountains.
