Al-Mshari Mosque

Religious Monuments

(Also Known as the Mosque of Zayd ibn Thabit al-Ansari)
Built in 1187, following the recapture of the city by Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi (Saladin), this mosque is believed to have been constructed over the remains of an older Latin church.
The origin of the name “Al-Mashati” remains unclear. It may either refer to the craft of comb-making (“mushṭ” in Arabic), once practiced in the area, or to a person bearing the surname “al-Mashati.”
Today, the mosque stands as a testament to the layered religious and architectural history of the city, merging Ayyubid heritage with older foundations.
