Built immediately after the Islamic conquest in 636 CE, Al-Omari Mosque was constructed as a rectangular congregational mosque with three aisles flanked by basalt arcades. It was expanded during the Umayyad era and later renovated in 1260 CE with the addition of a square minaret built from black stone.
The mosque was restored under the supervision of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture in 2006, with reinforcement of the domes and consolidation of the original façade stones.
