Al-Omari Mosque in Saraqib

Religious Monuments

The Umari Mosque, nestled in the heart of Saraqib, stands as the oldest surviving Islamic landmark in the eastern countryside of Idlib. An inscription in the Kufic script on the foundation stone dates its renovation to 129 AH (747 CE). Later, in 1580, Sinan Pasha added a cylindrical minaret, reaching a height of 22 meters, crowned with a finely carved stone frieze along the balcony.

The prayer hall consists of two aisles under a domed wooden ceiling, supported by repurposed basalt columns taken from a nearby Roman site. In the mihrab, Byzantine marble panels, once transported by the Ayyubids, show an exquisite decorative band adorned with intricate floral motifs.
