As-Sadat Mosque

Religious Monuments

As-Sadat Mosque, also known as Al-Aqsab Mosque, is a historic mosque located in Damascus, dating back to the Ayyubid era. The mosque was constructed in 630 AH / 1232 CE by King Al-Ashraf Musa ibn Al-Adil Muhammad Al-Ayyubi, brother of Saladin Al-Ayyubi. Situated in the Al-Aqsab area, outside Bab Al-Salam, the mosque is named “As-Sadat” (meaning “the masters” or “the heads”) in reference to seven of the masters, companions of Ali ibn Abi Talib, who are buried there.

Special Details

The mosque, according to the marble plaque above its door during my 2004 field visit, was founded as per historical records.
