Bab al-Turkman stands on the northern face of the Homs wall. Its name comes from the Turkish cavalry unit that was stationed there to guard the northern breach. It was built during the Mamluk era (1292 CE) and is distinguished by a Kufic lintel that praises “al-Nasir Mohammed ibn Qalawun.” It consists of a pointed arch topped by a five-tiered muqarnas strip, leading to a six-meter-deep tunnel where passersby sought refuge during the Mongol invasion.
