Basha’s Bathhouse

Traditional Public Baths

Basha’s Bathhouse, also known as the Prince Ali al-Kujaki Bathhouse, is the oldest surviving bathhouse in Homs. Constructed in the mid-14th century (8th century AH) with funding from the Mamluk Deputy of Homs, Prince Ali al-Kujaki, its distinctive architectural style features walls of alternating black and white stones and perforated domes. These domes still filter light and steam in the traditional Levantine manner. The bathhouse consists of a nearly square barrani (outer section), followed by the wastani (middle section), and finally the hot section, complete with a marble basin and massage platform. All these areas are connected to a furnace that continues to provide hot water using almond wood from the Homs countryside.
