Bayt Khalid al-Azm in Damascus
Bayt Khalid al-Azm is located in Old Damascus, just outside its northwestern walls, in the Sarouja quarter. It occupies the eastern section of the district’s main street, where it intersects with Revolution Street, positioned east of al-Shamiya al-Baraniyah School and west of al-Khanji Hammam.
Khalid al-Azm was born in the Sarouja neighborhood of Damascus in 1903, into a prominent and affluent family. His father, Muhammad Fawzi Pasha al-Azm, was one of the city’s leading notables during the Ottoman era. Khalid pursued his education in Istanbul before enrolling in the Faculty of Law in Damascus in 1919.
A seasoned statesman and skilled politician, he was appointed Minister of Justice and Foreign Affairs in 1939, later serving as Minister of Finance, Rationing, Foreign Affairs once again, and finally National Defense. He held the office of Prime Minister five separate times and was named Syria’s Minister Plenipotentiary to France in 1947.
He returned to the premiership in 1962 until 1963, after which he relocated to Beirut, where he remained until his passing in 1965.
