It is the remains of the White Crusader Castle built by the Knights Templar. The modern city now stands upon its ruins. It is said that Nur al-Din Mahmoud captured it, only for the Crusaders to later reclaim it—until Sultan Baybars ultimately seized it for good in the year 1271.
