The statue of Our Lady of the Valley was erected in 2009 on Mount al-Sa’ih at an altitude of 980 meters, overlooking the villages of the Green Valley. The site was chosen atop the remains of a Byzantine monastery where tombstones, the oldest dating back to the 9th century, were found. The church adjacent to the statue is a pilgrimage center for thousands of Syrians and Lebanese on the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin (August 15), when a festive mass is broadcast from the hill via satellite channels.
