Damascus Citadel

Castles

Damascus Castle, a 13th-century Ayyubid fortress boasting huge towers and impregnable walls, served as the city’s centre of government and defence. Despite the neglect and changes it has suffered over time, it still stands as a witness to successive eras, from the Seljuks to the Ottomans.

Special Details

Contains stucco carvings, including the signature of an artisan named “Abu al-Wajd”, and a hall covered with nine vaults believed to have been the throne room. Late Ottoman era.
