Dawayat cave

Historical Landmarks

Dawiyat Cave is the oldest cave in the region. It was discovered in 1948 when a sheep fell into one of its natural openings, and was practically explored in 1956 by a team of researchers.
During both the Ottoman and French occupations, it served as a refuge for revolutionaries and fugitives.
The name Dawiyat is derived from the Syrian dialect word for light (daw), referring to the light that penetrates the cave through its openings.
