Hammam al-Salhiyah

Traditional Public Baths

The Salhiyah Hammam in Aleppo is a prominent historical landmark that reflects the city’s rich heritage. Built in 1485, it dates back to the late ninth century of the Islamic calendar (corresponding to the fifteenth century AD). It was constructed by Prince Azdamar bin Abdullah Circassian Royal Ashrafi, one of the Mamluk princes in Aleppo. The hammam is located in the ancient Bab al-Maqam area of the Old City of Aleppo, an area with a long history and important monuments. The hammam served the neighborhood’s residents and those in the surrounding areas. It was a place for not only physical hygiene, but also socializing and relaxation. The hammam’s construction reflects the flourishing of architecture and art in Aleppo under Mamluk rule. The Salhiyah Hammam is not the oldest in the city. It was restored around 1700 CE. Like many other landmarks in Aleppo, it was destroyed in the war but was restored and reopened in 2018.
