Damascus

Hammam Jarrah

Traditional Public Baths

Located in the Suwayqa neighborhood just outside Damascus’s Old City, near Hassan Mosque, Hamam Jarrah is a Mamluk-era bath rebuilt during the Ottoman period. Its richly decorated entrance leads into domed chambers with skylights and stone iwans surrounding a central stone fountain. Elaborate plant and geometric motifs attest to the continuity of classical bath traditions into later eras.

Special Details

An entrance decorated with a baroque pointed arch, a dated inscription of three poetic verses, perforated domes with skylights, vegetal and geometric decorations, an ablaq stone façade, and arched windows. Mamluk era, 747 AH / 1346 AD.
