The slopes of Maaloula are lined with tightly clustered houses carved into limestone, reflecting human adaptation to harsh terrain and the continued use of the Aramaic language. The construction system is based on the principle of vertical stacking, whereby the roof of the lower house becomes the courtyard of the upper house, providing natural cooling
