The Midhat Pasha Market is the western extension of the Roman “Straight Street.” It acquired its current name in 1878 when the governor of Damascus, Midhat Pasha, restored it, replacing the classical columns with an iron roof topped with zinc layers to protect the shops from the rain. With a length of 600 meters, the market forms a commercial artery displaying Damascene silk, hammered copper, and wood mosaics, encapsulating the city’s development from the Roman to the Ottoman eras. Its roofed design attracts light through small glass openings, providing natural light to the shops.
