Nahhasin Market

Historic Souks and Khans

Extending alongside the western wall of Damascus Citadel, Souk Al-Nahhasin (Coppersmiths’ Market) embodies the city’s connection to metalworking since the Mamluk era. The market was founded in the 15th century as a hub for shaping copper utensils, then flourished during the Ottoman period with increased demand for jam and molasses pots. Today, the rhythmic clang of hammers on red metal resonates with the scent of charcoal, offering visitors a unique sensory experience. Workshops are distributed within stone vaults, illuminated by a side light filtering through openings in the metal roof completed in 1890, while a massive iron gate secures the passage at night.
