Castles

The Qasr al-Hayr al-Sharqi is located 120 km northeast of Palmyra and has been placed on the UNESCO Tentative List (file 1298). Built in 728 CE during the reign of al-Walid ibn Yazid, it is characterized by a square plan (200 x 200 meters) with an outer wall and an arched entrance topped with vine decorations. Inside the walls, there is a mosque with an octagonal courtyard and a deep well with a pulley opening, while a 16 km long aqueduct from Mount al-Balas feeds a garden with pistachio and fruit trees.
