Sacred Heart Chaldean Church

Religious Monuments

The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus for the Chaldeans in Aleppo is a significant religious and cultural landmark for the Chaldean Catholic community. It was inaugurated in the 20th century by Bishop Marcos Timotheos to serve the Chaldean community in the Sulaymaniyah neighborhood. The church functions as a spiritual and social center, hosting prayers and Masses in accordance with the Chaldean rite. Some rituals are performed in the Syriac language, aiding in the preservation of the community’s cultural and religious heritage. Additionally, it organizes religious and cultural events that strengthen social bonds among its members. Architecturally, the church features an 18-meter-diameter iron dome, supported by cross-shaped reinforcements, reflecting a modern industrial aesthetic. In 2013, the church hall was transformed into a communal kitchen. It later underwent restoration, including the installation of stained glass featuring Syriac and Chaldean motifs, and the dome was illuminated with smart lighting that changes colors according to the liturgical calendar.
