St. George’s Church is considered one of the most renowned churches in Latakia, located in the goldsmiths’ souk within the Old City.
It is named after St. George the Trophy-Bearer, one of the most prominent martyrs in the Orthodox Christian tradition.
The exact date of its construction remains unknown, but its earliest documented renovation took place in 1723.
In 1848, it was merged with an adjacent church to facilitate its expansion.
The church underwent a complete restoration in 1940, during the episcopate of Metropolitan Krivine Ghareeb. This event is commemorated in poetic verses inscribed on two marble plaques inside the church.
