Shammaya Palace, built between 1865 and 1872 in the AlAmin Jewish quarter, exemplifies the luxurious residences of wealthy Damascene Jews and Muslims. Commissioned by the affluent Shammaya Effendi, and contemporaneous with other grand houses like Khawaja Islambouli and Khawaja Lazbuna, each costing over 20,000 Ottoman liras.
The palace features lush gardens, water pools, fountains, and lavish decorative flourishes including mosaics, stained-glass windows, and Hebrew inscriptions above doorways.
Unfortunately, decades of neglect and overcrowded habitation have eroded many original features, with multiple families now living within subdivided rooms.
