Tel Ajaja / Arbad

Historical Landmarks

The tel Ajaja or Arpad site was strategically located for controlling the road between the Khabur and the Tigris rivers. It features a square fortress with four towers and chamfered corners. French excavations revealed tablets documenting the passage of a donkey caravan loaded with copper. The fort has been damaged by earthquakes, and a project has been undertaken to fill the cracks with lime mortar and reinforce the towers with wooden supports.
