Tell Kazel is recognized as the sole extant site on the Syrian coast linked to the ancient city of Simyra, which played a pivotal role in the development of early civilizations along the eastern Mediterranean littoral. The site is referenced in the Amarna Letters and functioned as a significant commercial hub during the Late Bronze Age.
The site encompasses a major sanctuary dating to the Late Bronze Age, featuring statuary, seals, and an imported Cypriot ceramic assemblage. Archaeological investigations have also revealed architectural remains from the Iron Age, alongside a large necropolis attributed to the Hellenistic period.
Conservation status: The site is in a good state of preservation.
