Tell Qadesh, also known as Tell Nabi Mend, is located southwest of Homs, rising 28 meters above the Orontes plain. It was the center of the Hittite kingdom of “Qadesh,” which fought a famous battle against Ramesses II (1274 BCE). An Oxford expedition (1985–2011) unearthed mud-brick palaces, a defensive breach framed by round towers, and Egyptian pottery stamped with Ramesses’ seal.
