One of the rarest and most architecturally unique mosques in Latakia, Al-Mina Mosque—also locally known as “Jami‘ al-Iskala” (the Dock Mosque)—stands out for both its distinctive maritime location and elevated design.
Built in 1748 by al-Hajj al-Rais Hammouda bin Ibrahim al-Tunisi al-Maghribi, the mosque was constructed above old port warehouses, giving it the appearance of being “suspended” over the harbor—hence the name “the Hanging Mosque”.
An inscription at the site praises the founder, stating:
“This mosque was graciously established by al-Hajj al-Rais Hammoud, earning immense reward and great honor in return.”
