The Mausoleum of Saladin

Religious Monuments

Just a few steps from the northern gate of the Umayyad Mosque lies the Mausoleum of Saladin (1195 CE), housed in a chamber built of alternating limestone and black basalt—a symbolic representation of the unity of the Levant.

The interior evokes both austere simplicity and solemn reverence, featuring the original wooden sarcophagus alongside a European marble tomb, gifted during the visit of Kaiser Wilhelm II.
