The Monumental Arch (Arch of Triumph)

Gates and Towers

The Monumental Arch, widely known as the “Arch of Triumph,” stands at the middle of the Colonnaded Street, marking the transition for visitors from the temple quarter to the market quarter. Built around 200 CE, it consists of two side supports joined by a semi-circular arch decorated with a frieze of grape clusters and military ornaments. The gate served as a ceremonial frame for Palmyra’s victories on its caravan routes. It was re-used during the Byzantine era with the addition of a cross inside a decoration on the Corinthian capital.
